Revive Your Prayer Life

By: Derek Dunn

Struggling to stay consistent in prayer? Learn simple, practical steps to build a deeper, more personal prayer life that keeps you connected to God every day.

Prayer is one of the most powerful ways to connect with God, yet many people struggle to make it a consistent habit. Maybe you’ve felt unsure if you’re “doing it right” or wondered why some prayers seem to go unanswered. But what if prayer wasn’t about finding the perfect words or getting immediate results? What if prayer was about drawing closer to God in the way He invites us to?

Jesus gave us a model for prayer—not just words to recite, but a way to engage with God that transforms our daily lives. Here’s a practical guide to praying in a way that deepens your faith and keeps you connected to God every single day.

1. Set a Time and Place for Prayer

One of the best ways to build a prayer habit is to designate a consistent time and place for it. In Matthew 6:6, Jesus speaks about going into a “closet” or private room to pray. But He wasn’t saying that prayer only counts if it happens in a physical closet. The point is to create intentional space in your life for conversation with God.

  • Schedule it: Put prayer on your calendar like an important meeting. If it’s planned, you’re more likely to follow through.
  • Pick a place: Whether it’s your kitchen table, your car, or a quiet moment before bed, find a spot where you can focus.
  • Start small: If the thought of long prayer times feels overwhelming, start with 30 seconds, then build from there.

God isn’t looking for the perfect environment—He’s looking for a willing heart.

2. Use a Pattern for Prayer

Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) as a pattern, not just as words to repeat. You can use it as a framework for your own prayers:

  • Start with worship: Acknowledge who God is. Play worship music if it helps you focus.
  • Surrender your will: Say, "God, this is about You, not me. Help me follow Your will today."
  • Bring your needs to Him: Ask God for your daily needs—wisdom, strength, provision, or guidance.
  • Express gratitude: Thank God for things you often take for granted—your breath, your home, your family.
  • Confess and forgive: Ask for forgiveness and release bitterness toward others.
  • Seek protection: Pray for strength against temptation and trust that God is leading you.

This structure keeps your prayer intentional without feeling scripted.

3. Pray Scripture Over Your Life

One of the most powerful ways to strengthen your prayers is by using the Bible. Many of the Psalms are prayers written by David, and praying through them can help shape your own words to God.

  • Turn a verse into a prayer: For example, "Lord, help me not to be anxious about anything" (Philippians 4:6).
  • Use scripture to shape your mindset: If you struggle with worry, pray "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7).
  • Personalize a passage: Read a psalm and insert your name into it as you pray.

When you use scripture in prayer, you’re aligning your heart with God’s truth.

4. Be Personal and Honest with God

God already knows what you’re going through, so be real with Him. Prayer isn’t about presenting a polished version of yourself—it’s about connection.

  • Be completely honest: Instead of pretending everything is fine, say, "God, I don’t know what to do. I need Your help."
  • Differentiate between complaining and honesty: The Israelites grumbled in the wilderness, blaming God. But there’s a difference between blaming God and trusting Him with your pain.
  • Bring your emotions to Him: Whether you’re sad, angry, or confused, tell God. He can handle it.

The more personal your prayers, the deeper your intimacy with God will grow.

5. Be Persistent in Prayer

In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, we’re told to “pray without ceasing.” That doesn’t mean you need to be on your knees 24/7—it means living with a heart always ready to pray.

  • Pray throughout your day: Short, simple prayers can be just as powerful as long ones.
  • Pray in unexpected places: Try praying while grocery shopping, driving, or waiting in line.
  • Don’t give up: Even when it feels like nothing is happening, keep praying.

Some prayers may not be answered the way we expect, but God is always working behind the scenes.

Final Thoughts: Never Give Up on Prayer

Prayer isn’t about using the right words or getting what we want—it’s about staying close to God. No matter how long you’ve been praying, or how discouraged you may feel, don’t stop. God is more faithful to us than we could ever be to Him.

He will never leave you. He will never forsake you. And He invites you to pray—not just as a religious duty, but as a relationship with Him.

So set aside time. Follow the Lord’s model. Pray scripture. Be honest. And above all—keep praying.
